SOCIAL INCLUSION

because psychological well-being is a right of every person

The ongoing pandemic has further aggravated the difficulties of many people who end up being marginalized. But a society in which there are those who do not have food, a home, nor the comfort of contact with the community, is not worthy of being called civil. PsyPlus therefore intends to commit itself to promoting inclusion and care for anyone, with acts of concrete social solidarity and by putting fundamental scientific knowledge into the system for the definition of effective community interventions.

Housing Plus!

The house, a space all to yourself

A home is the space in which we welcome and feel welcomed. The house protects us when we return from a run in the rain; it is that place where we invite the people we care about, cooking something for them; when we lie down on the sofa to gather strength after a hard day, the house is in fact the indispensable premise for reflecting, making plans and believing in the future. Overcoming homelessness must start from the home.

Ask street people what they want.

He will tell you: "a house"

Homelessness it arises from poverty, loss of ties, mental distress, trauma, addictions, prison. Life on the street causes or aggravates psychological distress, substance use and marginalization.

The target: PsyPlus intends to tackle the problem of homelessness in Rome with Housing Plus projects! inspired by the innovative Housing First model, working in synergy with institutions, social and health services and other associations in the area.

The working group
To this end, a highly motivated multidisciplinary team has been created which includes specialized figures in psychology, sociology and economics with many years of experience in working with severe social marginalization.

A growing phenomenon
More than 8.000 homeless people live in Rome. The psychological and social consequences of the economic crisis of the last decade and the ongoing pandemic are leading to a steady increase in people on the street.

How to overcome homelessness?
In stark contrast to the predominant approach, in the 90s a psychologist named Sam Tsemberis proposed an evidence-based model with the aim of eliminating homelessness, immediately giving a home to those who live on the street, regardless of adherence to treatments or cures. Thus was born the Housing First model.

Housing First, not housing only!
The Housing First model starts from the assumption that housing is a human right and aims at promoting well-being, favoring active involvement. This is part of a person-centered project that provides flexible psychosocial support based on the wishes, needs and history of the participants.

REVERSE PLANS: HOUSING FIRST MEANS STARTING FROM A SAFE SPACE TO RETURN TO SELF-CARE.

The limits of the emergency approach
The still predominant approach is based on temporary and fragmented responses that lead to the frequent abandonment of the reception structures and the network of services, without allowing the construction of a real planning.

Concrete results
National and international experience shows that 80/90% of the people involved in Housing First projects stay at home, improving their psychophysical well-being and their degree of social inclusion. The effectiveness of the model is recognized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies.

Greater sustainability
Housing First has lower costs than the current reception system. It reduces the economic burden on social services, the health system and the judiciary. The people directly involved, their families and citizens as a whole benefit from it.

Guests
The Housing Plus! it will be aimed at homeless people with mental distress and / or addictions. These will be followed and supported by our team by entering homes in well-connected neighborhoods with services.

Housing Plus! in practice

The Housing Plus! aims to promote the well-being of people and foster their social inclusion, providing psychological support, accompaniment in accessing services, rights and welfare benefits as well as support in the reconstruction of interpersonal bonds.

People who enter the house will sign a housing agreement which provides for an economic contribution, compliance with the rules of coexistence and participation in periodic meetings with the reference operator / trice.

Of stigmas and stings

stigma (στίγμα) in Greek means sign, mark, sting.

And i brands they are the ones we often put on certain stories as well as on people. Especially if they have something that we fear may belong to us and from which we feel the urge to distance ourselves.

A house without steps

My granddaughters have a cloth hut. Inside there is a little bit of everything. The parents, me, the grandmother and all the people they are connected to put in there. The hut has windows and they choose when to lower or raise the blinds. The hut is there, in their room. Sometimes they play it, sometimes they prefer to stay elsewhere.

For the homeless, the street is a cage, the home is freedom

People homeless they live locked up in a plurality of cages, invisible but tangible, from which it seems impossible to get out. Guarantee him one casa in which to live, following the Housing First model, is the most effective tool to give them back freedom and the dignity they deserve.
